Tips for a Dancer’s First Performance
Competitive dance is an incredible sport. It requires drive, passion, and so much confidence to do well, but it’s fun through and through. This is probably why so many young competitive dancers go on to compete for the rest of their lives. Here at Miss Colleen’s Elite Dancentre, we hope to ignite this passion in the young dancers that walk through the doors of our center.
In today’s blog post, we are going to talk about a dancer’s first competition and a few of the things that they can do to prepare for it. Inevitably, there will be jitters that they experience, but if they spend some time preparing, those first few minutes of the competition are the only time that they’ll be nervous.
Practice Often
Dance is a sport that requires quite a bit of practice. When it comes to competitive dance, you can guarantee that your child is going to need to practice, practice, practice, before they feel confident in themselves and their performance. Given that it will be their first time competing, it makes sense that they would be nervous about the competition. With that being said, a dancer that has practiced their routine to near perfection can feel confident walking out on stage, and that confidence can really make a difference in a performance.
If there are new moves that you’re going to be including in a routine or parts that you’re not confident with, make sure that you continue to focus on practicing them early on. By doing this early on, you can feel so much more confident when the competition rolls around.

Keep a Positive Mentality
Staying positive throughout the day of the competition is another factor that can greatly affect how well the competition goes. If your kiddo is feeling good about their dance, it’s going to show when they’re performing. While practicing the dance routine is a great way to create confidence for the competition, having a positive energy and mentality will also translate into their dancing, so it’s important to work on their head space on the day of the competition.
Have Fun
Competitions can be overwhelming, with the amount of practice that they require and the jitters that happen up to the point of getting on stage. Even though competitions are a new level of dance for many young dancers, the underlying factor of dance being fun should still there. When your child walks out onto the stage, the one thing that you want to ensure is that they’re still having a good time. Remind them of this if they start to focus too much on their nerves or the competition itself.
